BIOSAFE Initiative

Abstract

Five out of six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries intervened in the conflict in Yemen, increasing the risk of attacks from terrorist groups. Recent threats to use biological and chemical agents to cause harm and the international response to the Ebola epidemic highlighted many areas of vulnerability, including the necessary coordination between law enforcement and health personnel during a biological incident. The INTERPOL BioTerrorism Prevention Unit is located in Lyon, France, and seeks to establish sustainable bioterrorism prevention programs across selected regions and works to achieve this through the development and delivery of tailored capacity building and training while also connecting countries to INTERPOL’s databases and services. INTERPOL’s BIOSAFE initiative is the next step in facilitating sustainable training programs on biosecurity and bio preparedness capability and providing ongoing commitment to enhancing regional communication and capability. BIOSAFE will provide insight into the current procedural status of each GCC country and allow for relevant improvements to be identified for the ultimate goal of implementing best practice policy and procedures.
