Development of a universal codification system for animal health data and its integration into World Animal Health Information System

Abstract

Support OIE in the development of a universal codification system to standardize and build guidelines to enhance interoperability of animal health data. This initiative will provide guidance and a framework for developing new animal health information technology (IT) initiatives. Furthermore, this initiative will standardize most commonly utilized animal health terminology such as terminologies relating to disease names, laboratory tests, quantitative outbreak data and control measures. This initiative will begin by assembling a cohort of experts in the field to form a think tank. This group will evaluate current best practices, identify opportunities for enhancements, develop new concepts, and guide implementation of the codification system. Additionally, an OIE ad hoc group will be also be formed. This group will be responsible for further development and evaluation, overseeing the codification system, and notifying appropriate leadership of the current status. The initiative will develop communication strategies and materials to inform OIE member countries and BTRP partner countries of the newly developed codification system.
