WHO Development of Africa Regional Lassa Fever Operational Guidelines
Abstract
Improve sub-national, national and international preparedness and to capacitate local health authorities in at-risk areas to strengthen readiness, timely detection and rapid outbreak control for future Lassa fever outbreaks in at-risk countries. WHO will engage Member States, Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) partners, particularly Emerging and Dangerous Pathogens Laboratory Network (EDPLN) laboratories, Lassa fever surveillance, IPC and clinical management Emerging Diseases Clinical Assessment and Response Network (EDCARN) experts to consolidate best practice and available evidence. The updated guidance and tools will be introduced in at-risk countries to support revision and renewal of their national control strategy for Lassa fever. This effort will reduce the threat of the spread of future Lassa fever outbreaks in Biological Threat Reduction Program (BTRP) partner countries and regions. Importantly, most of the measures that will be put in place by countries and partners will have a beneficial impact on the response to and control of any viral hemorrhagic fevers.
