RUGGEDIZED SOLVENT STABLE ENGINEERED BETA-BARREL MEMBRANE PROTEIN BASED BIOMIMETIC MEMBRANES FOR CWA PROTECTIVE FABRICS
Abstract
Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are challenging weapons of mass destruction (WMD) that could be encountered by warfighters during warfare; and first responders and civilians in instances of terrorism. These agents span a large range of properties but are primary mode of action include as blistering agents, choking agents, poisons, incapacitating agents, vomiting agents and nerve agents. CWAs are chemicals that have high toxicity and can be delivered via several routes including as liquids, gases (or vapor) and aerosols. Both warfighters and emergency personnel and ideally civilians as wellneed to be protected when encountering these chemicals and thus need to be equipped with personal protective equipment that covers exposed skin, breathing passages, and eyes. Thus, there is a need to develop barrier materials that completely exclude these CWAs when worn as clothing or as part of masks.
