Biosurveillance of Brucellosis in Azerbaijan Georgia and Turkey

Abstract

We will investigate brucellosis in both humans and livestock across the countries of Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey to determine which strains of Brucella abortus and B. melitensis are circulating. We will use phenotypic and genomic sequencing approaches to assess potential epidemiological connections between human and animal infections. Our project will enhance biosurveillance for a critical infectious disease in the region and will support a rigorous and consistent approach to biosecurity, directly addressing Thrust Area 6. The project will engage leading public health, medical, veterinary, and academic researchers in each country using a One Health approach, and will provide comprehensive training in biosafety, microbiological and epidemiological research, as well as cutting-edge phenotypic and genomic analyses.
