Black Sea CNS

Abstract

Since the breakdown of the former Soviet Union, countries in the Black Sea region have experienced numerous cases of illicit trafficking of radiological and nuclear (RN) materials. In the past years, dozens of cases of RN smuggling in the region have been reported to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Incident and Trafficking Database (ITDB). In the last three years, smuggling incidents have been reported in all countries in the region. On several occasions, countries have reported that radioactive sources were trafficked from nearby countries. Due to the transnational dimension of this phenomenon, it is crucial that a system of coordination, cooperation and timely exchange of information is established at the regional level between relevant State security agencies.
