The Mediterranean and Black Sea Flyway Transboundary Determinants of Avian Zoonotic Infectious Diseases

Abstract

This project will create a Threat Reduction Network for avian diseases and especially dangerous pathogens (EDP) called the Avian Zoonotic Disease Network (AZDN) conducted in four countries along the MBSF (Georgia, Ukraine, Jordan, Ethiopia). We will create a community of researchers that share information on disease diagnostics, microbiomes, eco-immunology, field biosafety and biosecurity, proper wildlife capture and handling, experimental design, statistical analysis, and scientific writing. Network members and country organizations will strengthen capabilities in biosafety and biosecurity, next generation sequencing (NGS) by exercising two DTRA-created genomic laboratories (NCDC, NAHDIC), immunological techniques for wild birds, and leading-edge bioinformatics and statistical analyses. Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUC) will be created in Ukraine, Jordan, and Ethiopia.
