LAUNCH K-3
Abstract
The purpose of LAUNCH K-3 is to provide comprehensive STEM programming in three Madison County Schools (MCS) in grades K-3. LAUNCH K-3 has a one goal: Improve college-and-career readiness of military dependent students in STEM. MCS defines college-and-career readiness through ACT STEM proficiency benchmarks met on ACT STEM proficiency benchmarks met on ACT Aspire. The goal has a clear, measurable, and achievable outcome: The percentage of military dependent students at the target schools in 3rd grade meeting the ACT Aspire proficiency benchmark in STEM will increase 6% over the baseline year. To reach the outcome, the project design utilizes two strategies: in-class supports and extra-curricular activities. In-class supports consist of implementing Project Lead the Way (PLTW), which offers programing where students apply STEM knowledge, skills, and habits of mind; providing comprehensive PLTW professional development through Auburn University, grade level lead teachers, and PLCs; and establishing ongoing instructional support from a qualified STEM coach, who will assist teachers to transfer new knowledge and skills into the classroom. Extra-curricular activities will focus on establishing MakerSpace STEM Club programs.
