Achieving Excellence Through STEM
Abstract
Through the “Achieving Excellence Through STEM” project, seven military-impacted Leilehua complex schools in a K-12 feeder pattern commit to expanding STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) related knowledge and experiences to equip students for the 21st century workforce. With math and science identified as critical foundational skills for success in STEM-related careers, the goal is to raise student achievement in those two areas through high quality instruction. Continuous professional development will allow teachers to develop rigorous and relevant curricula as they deepen their understanding of the new Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and design lessons that integrate STEM into daily instruction. As a result, students will receive foundations in STEM that can be built upon as they advance through the grade levels. The curricular rigor will also prepare students for taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses and successfully passing the exams. Student achievement will also be served through targeted instructional supports including implementation of a Universal Screening tool, Mathematics and Science Learning Institutes, and AP preparation sessions. Ultimately, our efforts will afford all students the ability to adapt to technological advancements of a changing workforce and open opportunities both in Hawaii and throughout the world.
