Readying Students for College and Careers in STEM

Abstract

Kailua Intermediate School (KIS) in Windward District of Hawaii Dept. of Education has experienced a recent significant increase in military connected students from 11 to 25% and applies for the first time for a MCASP grant. KIS identified a need for improved mathematics achievement and opportunities for STEM engagement. Strategies utilized include in-class supports, tutoring, and extracurricular STEM activities that will be supported by professional development focused on evidence-based strategies including universal design for learning, project-based learning, AVID strategies in mathematics, and extracurricular time for STEM. A mathematics universal screener will be utilized to assign students for intervention.
