Creating College and Career Ready Students

Abstract

The goal of public education has changed from sorting and selecting students to preparing all students for postsecondary opportunities. The Fountain-Fort Carson School District is committed to increasing the number of military connected secondary students in grades 7-12 who are college and career ready. To successfully complete this objective, the district must better align its K-12 curriculum with the key knowledge and skills students should master to take full advantage of college. The district must also implement instructional practices that enhance key cognitive skills to help students to formulate, investigate, analyze, evaluate, and propose solutions to non-routine problems. Additional focus must be placed on intentionally teaching self-management skills as part of curriculum, and developing student and parent knowledge about postsecondary education and opportunities. A key requisite to these accomplishments is to ensure secondary teachers are accountable to more rigorous and consistent PLC processes that focus on creating a college–focused culture, college readiness standards, and the teaching of self-management skills to prepare students for the complexity of applying for college. A consistent vision for college and career readiness can be implemented in the secondary schools with the addition of a college and career specialist position. The result of this work will be a greater number of students empowered to engage in college-level coursework and apply for college or other post-secondary opportunities.
