"STEM Success Initiative" to support military-connected students STEM achievement through: in class curriculum and instruction support, in-class technology support, and extracurricular activities
Abstract
The purpose of this award is to provide funds for a 5 year grant to SVUSD to support a “STEM Success Initiative” to improve military-connected student achievement in STEM. SVUSD serves families from Fort Irwin National Training Center and the Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, with 76.9% of district students being military-connected. This grant to SVUSD will raise the percentage of military-connected 12th graders who complete the STEM courses required for California public university eligibility. SVUSD will also increase the percentage of military-connected 5th and 8th graders who meet or exceed standards on the California Science Test. To accomplish this, SVUSD will implement: 1. In-class curriculum and instruction support (including updated textbooks, hands-on materials, and AVID instructional support strategies); 2. In-class technology supports (digital STEM tools and technology to utilize them); and 3. STEM extracurricular activities (offered both at schools and on base). These strategies will be optimized with a robust professional learning plan for educators.
