Students and Teachers Engaging Minds to Improve Achievement in Math and Science (Project STEM)

Abstract

Project STEM has two goals: 1) to improve students’ achievement in mathematics, and 2) to improve students’ achievement in science. Three strategies will be carried out with each goal: 1) in-class curriculum and instruction featuring math- and science-related project-based learning, 2) in-class technology featuring educational software to support math achievement and robotics to support science achievement, and 3) extra-curricular programming featuring math and science summer school activities. Our rationale is grounded in a needs assessment showing BPS trails the state in math and science achievement, and our overarching objective is to prepare students to be college and career ready. An expected outcome is that math and science achievement will each improve by six or more percentage points over the performance period of the project.
