Promoting a Military-Connected Student STEM Mindset

Abstract

Richland School District Two in Columbia, SC proposes the Promoting a Military-Connected STEM Mindset project that will be implemented at six elementary schools: Bookman Road, Catawba Trail, Center for Achievement, Lake Carolina Upper & Lower, and Langford Elementary Schools. These schools proudly serve 513 military-connected students. This comprehensive project has two clear goals: 1) Increase academic outcomes of military dependent students in grade 4 in science. 2) Increase academic outcomes for military-connected students in grade 6 in science. These goals have been developed based on the grades served at the participating schools. The project employs only research-based instructional strategies that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving academic achievement. Professional learning specialists will provide intensive training in science using a new curriculum that will replace the schools’ outdated curriculum. In-class curriculum and instruction support, extra-curricular field trips, after-school tutoring for struggling students, and in-class technology support are key programmatic activities.
