Promoting Military-Connected STEM Opportunities for College and Career Readiness

Abstract

Tomah Area School Districts covers almost 500 square miles in the Monroe, Jackson, and Juneau Counties of Wisconsin. We are surrounded by three military installations: Fort McCoy, Camp Williams, Volk Field and a Veterans Administration Hospital. While 136 military-connected students attend grades 9-12, only 7 (5.1%) are enrolled in STEM courses. The purpose of this grant is to increase military-connected student STEM enrollment and math achievement through the implementation of a hands-on Design Lab featuring Robotics, Augmented Reality, and 3-D Design applications. This lab and supporting credit frameworks will provide a structure for increased student engagement and enrollment by providing “real world” tools and resources. Professional development in personalized learning and use of design tools will be an integral element of success. Objectives are: 1) increase military-connected student enrollment in STEM courses by 20% and 2) increase overall math achievement scores for students enrolled in STEM courses by 10%.
