Stepping Up STEM Skills to Cultivate College Career Readiness in Grotons Military Students

Abstract

Groton Public Schools (GPS) has identified the need for improved practices in science, including a greater emphasis on conceptual understanding and inquiry-based instruction, to increase STEM comprehension among GPS military-connected students. To accomplish this goal, Groton’s elementary and high school teachers will receive professional learning in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and the International Baccalaureate Careers Program (IB CP). In addition to this improved level of teacher instruction, students will gain access to the latest methods in STEM pedagogy through new curricula and extracurricular activities, including STEM-themed afterschool clubs and academic summer programs. Through these institutional changes, our goal is for Groton’s military-connected students to achieve greater levels of college and career readiness.
