Supporting Student Achievement in Secondary Science in Yelm

Abstract

Yelm Community Schools will implement a system that support and encourages enrollment in STEM courses beginning in the middle schools and continuing into high school. The program includes a a system-wide implementation of instruction of academic behaviors in all courses. This system ensures that students have the academic skills, organization and communication, to promote success in STEM. The STEM project has two goals: 1) Military-connected students in grades 10-12 will increase completion of dual credit STEM courses from 22% in SY1718 (baseline) to 25% by SY2023 with military-connected female student enrollment increasing from 9% to 18% by SY2023. 2) Military-connected students in grade 8 will increase science proficiency from baseline in SY1718 to 10% over baseline by SY2023 as measured by the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS).
