STEM in Motion: KISD Mobile Learning Lab

Abstract

Killeen Independent School District provides STEM education for military-connected students in grades 3rd through 5th to support the creation of a comprehensive STEM program by expanding STEM programing to the elementary level. The objectives are to provide quality STEM instruction focused on engineering and technology to students at identified campuses and provide community and parent STEM education opportunities via a mobile STEM lab. “STEM in Motion” would travel to 26 targeted elementary schools where students would engage in hand on learning focused on engineering and technology, with the integration of mathematics and science into the instruction. It is expected the mobile learning lab would increase the percent of military connected students scoring at or above the national norm on the NWEA MAP and the number of military-connected students who “approach grade level” on the mathematics and science assessment STAAR Texas state assessment by 2% each year in grades 3rd through 5th.
