Taking Flight: On to New Heights with STEM

Abstract

Students who develop robust science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skillsets are well-equipped to pursue STEM-related post-secondary educational and professional opportunities. Taking Flight: On to New Heights with STEM impacts approximately 3,790 students—1,030 military-connected students and 2,760 of their peers—enrolled at four schools in the Escambia County School District (FL) by providing STEM-focused, standards-aligned supports and activities to boost student achievement in mathematics and science. Co-curricular and extra-curricular resources, strategies, and activities serve to individualize learning and deepen student engagement in rigorous and rewarding STEM learning activities both on-, and off-campus. Additionally, the project expands professional capacity of teachers and improves instructional practice through high-quality, ongoing professional development that targets standards alignment, as well as the integration and implementation of technology resources.
