Full STEAM Ahead!
Abstract
Our world is becoming increasingly complex; success is driven not only by what you know, but by what you can do with what you know. It is more important than ever for students to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to solve tough problems, gather and evaluate evidence, and make sense of information. However, few American students pursue expertise in STEM fields—and there is an inadequate pipeline of teachers skilled in those subjects. As a result, in 2015 President Obama set a goal of increasing the number of students and teachers who are proficient in these vital fields (US Dept. of Ed, 2015). DoDEA also supported the development of STEM field in schools in 2014 by awarding our district the DoDEA STEM and Engineering grant. While these programs continue in the district, Full STEAM Ahead! will expedite and intensify the district’s goals to inspire military-connected students and teachers in the district to excel in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and the arts.
