Making Sense of Mathematics at Central 104
Abstract
Making Sense of Mathematics and Teaching at Central (MSMTC) aims to improve student achievement in mathematics at the elementary and middle school levels at Central School District #104 (CSD) in O’Fallon, Illinois. This project will expand our students’ capacity to learn mathematics by focusing professional development in two areas: increasing our teachers’ mathematical content knowledge and growing their levels of competency to implement more effective instructional math strategies that will, in turn, yield a deeper and more conceptual understanding of mathematics for their students. Additionally, our students will increase their confidence to develop a deeper understanding of math by practicing healthy habits for a mathematical growth mindset. These grant activities will take place in O’Fallon at Central School District 104 . CSD middle school students, along with O’Fallon School District 90 (OSD) middle school students, transition into O’Fallon Township High School District 203 (OTHS). Both OSD and OTHS are MCASP mathematics grant recipients, and all three school districts serve Scott Airforce Base military-connected students. This grant will also support mathematics instruction at OTHS by providing well-prepared entering ninth graders from two of their feeder districts. The expected outcome of the four-year implementation of MSMTC is to increase proficiency in mathematics for our military-connected students. Central School District 104 is a small, committed group of educators who are anxious to provide the best education, and they are looking for “help to support the students.” Through the delivery of high-quality, research-based professional development, MSMTC will provide that help.
