STEAMing into Health Sciences
Abstract
The STEAMing into the Health Sciences Project will be implemented at 5 schools within the Chula Vista Elementary School District in San Diego County. Project goals are to: (1) Increase elementary school students’ exposure to careers in the health sciences, (2) Improve 4th grade students’ awareness and knowledge of health science careers and how these careers align with their strengths and interests, and (3) Improve CAASPP/CAST performance of 5th grade students who experienced the Health Station, after-school STEM sessions and STEM summer camp. Strategies that will be delivered to students and supported by teacher professional development are: Project-based and work-based learning activities through a Health Station experience; in- class technology support through a personalized learning platform to help kids identify strengths, interests, and career aspirations; and extracurricular activities through after-school STEM clubs and STEM summer camp.
