PALS: Play and Learn Squad
Abstract
This proposal seeks to address an upward trend line of school-time discipline incidents among military-connected students. To address this community-wide concern, the Wheatland School District is offering a new service, called PALS (Play And Learn Squad), to our K-8th grade students attending Bear River School, Lone Tree Elementary School, and Wheatland Charter Academy in Northern California. PALS will fill a gap in our current multi-tiered system of support by providing students with regularly scheduled and intentional strategies that prepare them for work life balance through the application of healthy physical and mindful wellness activities and practices in elementary school. It is designed to support students via increasing educational continuity, building life-long social-emotional skill sets and developing healthy physical activity habits. Using best practices learned from the brain sciences, research-based curriculum and our experiences working with military-connected students, PALS aims to: (1) increase physical activity in a student-centered manner through direct instruction using a cooperative community/play model; (2) empower students with social-emotional skill set practice that develop their interpersonal capacity, foster a growth mindset, and enhance viewpoint reflections through integrated lessons across the campus yielding a school community common language/culture, (3) motivate students to conduct themselves and make choices that guide them toward positive physical and mental health; and (4) grow student self-regulation skills that tie back to personal health, workforce capacity, cooperative community and interpersonal capacity for the development of self-assured individuals who are positive contributors to their community’s synergy
