Elementary STEM Project
Abstract
The primary objective of this project is to provide a variety of engaging, standards-based Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) experiences for ALL of our elementary students. We want to ensure that our students have a strong STEM education foundation as well as the opportunities and the inspiration needed to pursue STEM careers. Paramount to our efforts will be to ensure that traditionally underrepresented groups in STEM fields, such as females, students of color, and students of poverty will have equal, if not greater, access to these resources and opportunities. Grant resources will be utilized in many ways including to: a) research, select and/or develop standards-aligned STEM curriculum resources, activities, and opportunities, b) train and develop our elementary teachers to become competent, confident, and effective STEM instructors, c) provide the critical start-up supplies, materials, and curriculum resources needed to offer engaging STEM learning opportunities, d) help our elementary teachers learn how to effectively and efficiently integrate STEM-related learning into their other subject areas. This project will involve all 13 of our elementary school sites and will directly and positively impact students in grades K-5. We will prioritize resources aimed at supporting instructional units, lessons, and activities that place an emphasis on: 1) Health Sciences, 2) Natural Sciences, 3) Engineering, 4) Computer Sciences and Robotics. Ultimately, it’s our aim to expose and inspire students through engaging, real-world STEM learning opportunities so we can increase the number of our students that consider pursuing STEM pathways within and beyond our school system.
