STEM through Prosocial Active Learning (PAL)
Abstract
K-12 STEM through Prosocial Active Learning (STEM-PAL) is a project to utilize a "whole-child" approach to increasing military-connected students academic STEM achievement by recognizing that before learning can take place, basic health needs must be met. STEM-PAL will first meet the mental health and wellness needs of students using a tiered approach to social/emotional learning (SEL) by implementing universal, small group, and individual lessons based upon identified SEL needs. This will be coupled with implementing a district wide prosocial, active learning classroom design to build a solid foundation. From there, project-based curriculum and increased technology integration components will overlap and compliment the previous elements to support a pyramid of holistic student growth, designed to meet the health/wellness and academic achievement needs of military-connected students. A Train-the-Trainer model will promote sustainability and affordable, long-term professional development. STEM-PAL will launch a district-wide SEL-STEM Bootcamp prior to the start of school in 2021 where teachers will be immersed in SEL and project-based learning (PBL) content, and grade-level teaming for PBL unit design. STEM-PAL will facilitate deeper technology integration within the classroom, along with virtual and out of school learning opportunities. The expansion of CTE courses, advanced STEM courses, and internships will promote future STEM careers. PBL, career training, and technology integration will be more easily implemented as a result of the prosocial behavior training that promotes a positive, collaborative classroom environment. This multi-faceted approach will address the identified academic and social/emotional wellness needs of military-connected students served by the Plato School District. The Government will not be acquiring property or services for the direct benefit of the Government; and, substantial involvement is not expected between the Government and the Recipient.
