All Students Can Succeed: Making Sense of Mathematics and Teaching in Mascoutah 2.0 (ASCS)
Abstract
All Students Can Succeed: Making Sense of Mathematics and Teaching in Mascoutah 2.0 (ASCS:MSMTM2.0) compliments a previously funded grant, Making Sense of Mathematics and Teaching in Mascoutah (FY 16), which focused on improving mathematics achievement for military-connected students in grades kindergarten through eight. The kindergarten through eighth-grade mathematics program has been transformed by both the activities from this previous grant and also the deep commitment of Mascoutah administrators and teachers. The elementary and middle school students’ curriculum has been improved and vertically aligned; their teachers’ content knowledge has increased; and the instructional strategies students now experience in their classrooms encourage discourse, number sense, and conceptual understanding. All Students Can Succeed ASCS:MSMTM2.0 will focus on closing gaps that remain in high school and special education mathematics, creating a seamless mathematics instructional experience for ALL Mascoutah students. The objectives of ASCS:MSMTM2.0 are to increase military-connected high-school students’ SAT scores, and to increase military-connected special needs students performance on the STAR360 mathematics assessment. Through teacher professional learning, and summer camp opportunities, ASCS:MSMTM2.0 will provide high-school students and struggling learners with the same opportunities for student-centered instruction, meaningful classroom discussion, and deep conceptual understanding in mathematics that is now afforded to elementary and middle-school students. Additionally, high-school students and struggling students will be encouraged to develop mathematical habits of mind that lead to a growth mindset. The mathematics program at Mascoutah School District will then be a coherent, systematic program for ALL students to succeed.
