Rethinking Mathematics through the Integration of Computer Science (REMICS)
Abstract
Between 2009 and 2015 STEM jobs in the U.S. grew by 10.5 percent (more than double the rate of all job growth in the same time period), accounting for over 800,000 new jobs. Most of this growth was in computer science (CS) fields, which saw employment grow from 3.2 million jobs in 2009 to 3.9 million jobs in 2015. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the STEM job rate at 8.0 percent of national job growth and non-STEM jobs growth at 3.4%. According to labor market data in South Carolina (SC Works Online Services, n.d.), there are more than 25,000 job openings in STEM fields across the state in 2020. Beaufort County School District seeks to prepare military-connected students for those high-wage, high-skill jobs by developing their computational thinking and digital literacy skills while deepening their knowledge of grade-level mathematics. The Rethinking Mathematics through the Integration of Computer Science (REMICS) project includes 6 elementary schools and 2 middle schools. Students will explore key math concepts using technology devices like 3D printers, robots, and graphing calculators and web-based programs like Google Classroom. Professional learning will improve teachers’ pedagogical skills in mathematics and develop their abilities to infuse the state computer science standards into grades 3-8 math. A successful program will increase student achievement in mathematics on the SC READY assessment in grades 3-8.
