Biloxi Public School Grant
Abstract
Biloxi Public School District is home to almost 7,500 active duty service members and their families. The focus of the proposal is to provide services to military dependent students promoting the development of strong foundations for STEAM literacy leading to literacy in advanced STEAM concepts, preparing students for the jobs of tomorrow. By building upon our successes in earlier DoDEA projects, projects that build STEAM literacy, leading to the understanding of advance STEAM concepts, will be aligned, and scaffolded across each grade level. Designed with a focus on the most high-wage, high-demand STEM careers aligned with national security and STEM priorities, computational thinking concepts and mathematics proficiency will be central to the program design, allowing for career awareness with a focus on computer science and cyber safety and cyber security pathways. Expanded program offering in the school day, coupled with ongoing professional development, will lead to increased proficiency for military connected students in the content areas of math and science, along with the development of critical coding skills. Competitive programs in robotics, coding, hacking, and cybersecurity will be included in the program. Parental and family engagement through STEM night and career exploration will take place regularly. The project will be built around a STEM learning ecosystem approach and will be aligned with national priorities articulated in the national STEM strategic plan, Charting a Course for Success: America’s Strategy for STEM Education. Cross sector partnerships will be developed to support workforce connections across the community.
