Sparta Area School District
Abstract
The Sparta Area School District (SASD) has made great strides in improving oppo1tunities and outcomes for our students over the last five years, in part because of two DoDEA grants (Project Bold Shift and Project Preparation). We propose to build upon this strong foundation through Project Focus Forward, which will increase access for military-connected students and their peers to STEM-focused project-based learning (PBL), blended learning, and social-emotional learning (SEL). Improving access to these evidence-based strategies, along with building the capacity of our staff to effectively implement new instructional techniques that suppo11 them, will provide our students with new pathways to college and career readiness. By implementing project-based learning and blended learning across content areas in middle and high school, and by providing additional project-based learning opportunities in our after-school programming, we will increase the percentage of military-connected students meeting ACT College Readiness Benchmark scores in Math and Science. Implementing an SEL curriculum in the elementa1y grades provides a critical complement to these efforts by providing students with skills necessary for success at the later grades. The SASD is pleased to continue our strong evaluation partnership with the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER) at the University of Wisconsin Madison. SASD has partnered with WCER as the External Evaluator for our last two DoDEA grants, and has received ve1y useful evaluation data of both a fonnative and summative nature to assist in our efforts to continually improve the work that these two grants have supported.
