Project BrainISE: Inspiring Science Excellence for Military Students
Abstract
Through Project BrainlSE, Yuma Elementary School District One proposes to build on the successes of past MCASP grants to prepare more than 1,550 military- connected students to be competitive in the future workforce. The project will integrate two complementary emphases for students in grades three through eight in four middle and eight elementary schools serving military connected students: building scientific literacy and developing healthy social-emotional skills (individual agency, resilience and executive function). The project will address scientific literacy through providing professional development and state-of-the art on/line science curriculum. In elementary grades, the district will continue its science cadre professional development model through which one teacher from each grade level at each school receives on-going training in science pedagogy and then shares and models that training for grade-level teammates; cadre training will occur during quarterly off-contract meetings, and science-focused grade-level team meetings will occur monthly. At the middle school level, the district will continue its well-received quarterly full-day professional development opportunities for science teachers to work together across schools on teaching practices and lesson development. Professional development for both groups will be provided by an outside consultant with background in three-dimensional science teaching (core ideas, cross-cutting concepts, and science/engineering practices) and also with knowledge of current developments in Arizona science standards and assessments. At the elementary level, the consultant will deliver the professional development with two teacher leaders in order to develop their expertise; they will then serve as in-district experts to provide support to cadre members. At the middle school level, the consultant will deliver the professional development in collaboration with a district-level instructional coach who will then provide weekly support through school-based professional learning communities and district science teacher meetings on early release days.
