Raise the Bar: An engaging approach to whole-child wellness and achievement through increased physical fitness

Abstract

The Raise the Bar Fitness Initiative is El Paso Independent School District’s project aimed at improving wellness and physical activity for its student in Kindergarten through 12th grade. This project puts students at the center by providing them tailored activities, engaging curriculum, and real-time feedback to grow knowledge and skills that they are able to carry into their homes, communities and adulthood. The goal of the project is to expand a successful fitness project that provides age-appropriate activities and showcases student dedication, creativity and hard work. For Kindergarten through 5th grade, physical education teachers will provide the project during physical education classes and will include heart rate monitoring and interactive activity projectors. An elective course offering will deliver goal-oriented resistance training and heart rate monitoring for middle and high school students. The Raise the Bar curriculum at all levels will emphasize physical fitness through cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition along with balanced nutrition and will be delivered vis project-based learning modules that allow student to work together to create projects that showcase their acquired knowledge and skills. The final showcase will be an annual district-wide competition that partners with the community stakeholders and Fort Bliss Army Installation. The Raise the Bar Fitness Initiative will tailor and replicate the work begun at Ross Middle to reach and connect all of the district’s military connected schools, the community, and Fort Bliss Army Installation through the comradery and competition of fitness and wellbeing.
