Healthy Knights

Abstract

Copenhagen Central School will partner with Cornell University /Cornell Cooperative Extension enacting Healthy Knights to prepare military-connected students (our future workforce) for work life balance by developing skills and aptitude through authentic STEM health science activities and multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) learning environments to address literacy achievement gaps. Strategies include: a) Summer and monthly half-day school-year STEM programs - Utilizing multidisciplinary experiential STEM learning activities focusing on core elements (physical, mental, social) of wellness. Relationships between overall wellness and the health sciences include: • Physical: focusing on effects of physical activity and nutrition on human anatomy. • Mental: exploring mindfulness, positive psychology and stress effects on mental health and cognitive functioning. • Social: understanding individual choices affect the environment (e.g., environmental benefits of a plant-based diet) and community (e.g., health risks associated with social isolation and intent/need for social isolation during a global pandemic). b) Literacy Coach will facilitate professional learning communities and provide in class curriculum and instruction support building faculty capacity to use student data to target student learning needs using an RTI/MTSS model and make available high-quality health literacy-relevant texts (non-fiction) in content area classroom instruction. c) A portion of summer programming will be devoted to reducing “Summer Slide” in reading. Students will engage in book clubs promoting a lifelong love of reading (fiction/non-fiction). d) Summative student outcomes will be assessed by the 4-H Common Measures Survey for Healthy Living, and NYS ELA Test. Formative measures include Fit Kits, Fit Future, mCLASS Universal Screening measures and data chat note catchers.
