Kaulike Ola_ Life Balance through Authentic Health Science Experiences
Abstract
The Hawaii Department of Education adopted Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in 2016, which are more process than content-driven, align with NGSS Three-Dimensional Learning and require students to demonstrate application of knowledge. With Hawaii state assessments fully aligned to reflect NGSS and an emphasis on phenomenon-driven learning by School Year 2019-2020, military-connected students at targeted schools will be required to develop skills that equip them to think critically, analyze information and solve complex problems. As part of Kaulike Ola - Life Balance through Authentic Health Science Experiences, one middle school and one high school in the Campbell-Kapolei Complex will enhance in-class curriculum and instruction support by integrating NGSS and work-based learning activities within the science curriculum, as well as offer extracurricular activities in the Health Sciences. Military-connected students will utilize in-class technology to support project-based learning, with teachers participating in targeted professional learning to enhance instruction. Kaulike Ola will not only provide effective transitions from middle to high school that increase educational continuity, it will help ensure that military-connected students improve science achievement based on qualitative and quantitative data to prepare them for college and career, with a focus on the Health Sciences.
