Computer Science for All

Abstract

Learning computational and math skills is closely linked in preparing students for college and careers in STEM fields. Students in Monterey Peninsula USD underperform their peers across California in math and science achievement. Math and science achievement among our Latinx, African American, and economically disadvantaged students is dramatically lower compared to that of their white, Asian, and not economically disadvantaged classmates. MPUSD’s Computer Science for All (CS for All) project will address the very limited access to CS education for military-connected and other students in our district, at a time when computing skills are increasingly needed for career success. CS for All targets the five schools in MPUSD, including three elementary, one middle, and one high school, where 10+% of students are military-connected. We plan to develop a sequential, standards-based TK-12 computer science curriculum, which we will then integrate into classroom instruction at the elementary schools, middle school math (and possibly science) classes, and high school math and data science courses. Students will also have access to extracurricular activities to explore CS and advance their CS and other STEM skills, including a CS/STEM Saturday Academy, after-school math tutoring, coding clubs and hackathons, a summer bridge program, and family CS/STEM learning events. CS for All is designed to (1) increase military-connected students’ exposure to CS instruction and (2) improve their mathematics skills and achievement, and to (3) building teachers’ knowledge and skills for leading CS instruction. Our expected outcomes focus on measurable gains in students’ results in local and state math testing, math course grades, and enrollment in AP Math and computer science classes, along with increased capacity for teachers to deliver effective computer science instruction, and parents increased digital literacy and knowledge of digital citizen.
