Portsmouth Town School District Grant

Abstract

Sprouting Success in Science is an integrated agricultural STEAM program for K-8 students of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Sixteen percent of the students’ parents are deployed to the U.S. Naval Station, Newport. Located on Aquidneck Island with Newport and Middletown, Portsmouth is one of three public school districts which Naval parents can send their children. Portsmouth’s rural setting, with farmland donated by local residents, provides a unique opportunity to engage all Aquidneck Island students with authentic agricultural experiences linked to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The primary goal of Sprouting Success in Science is to increase student achievement in K-8 science through an NGSS-connected sustainable agricultural framework. This lays the foundations for STEAM instruction in high school and beyond. With only 34% of Rhode Island students passing the Next Generation Science Assessment, mathematics, and English Language Arts (ELA), the state needs education reform. This is particularly true for science because elementary teachers tend to focus on mathematics and ELA. This results in a significant loss of scientific understanding that is challenging to recoup. Sprouting Success in Science goals are to: 1) Increase science achievement of military-connected students. 2) Increase the percentage of military-connected K-8 students interested in STEAM careers
