Building Bridges to Success
Abstract
Wheatland Union High School District is a rural district in the agricultural heart of the Sacramento Valley, at the southeast corner of Yuba County, California. Following COVID-19 school closures and distance learning, students returned to school with significant levels of learning loss, as evidenced by the fall 2021 administration of the NWEA. Student Reading scores for both military-connected and non-military-connected students showed an average of two grade levels below nationally normed grade level scores. To address this need, Goal 1 was developed stating: Military-connected students in Grades 9-10 will improve their Reading achievement as evidenced by quantitative NWEA Reading MAP Scores by the end of this grant cycle (May 31, 2027). Strategies include implementation of READ 180 program to support intensive literacy development, professional development for English teachers and all teaching staff, and establishing a Reading Lab with a Multiple Subjects credentialed teacher and one support staff. Goal 2 focuses on increasing military-connected student enrollment in Career Technical Education courses stating: Military-connected students in Grades 9-12 will increase enrollment in and completion of CTE courses as evidenced by student enrollment and completion numbers by the end of this grant cycle (May 31, 2027). Strategies include hiring an Academic Technician to support recruitment, data tracking, academic support, transferring to higher education programs, and increasing student options for Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs). Expected outcomes are increased reading achievement as measured by the NWEA assessment for grades 9-11 (12th grade does not test) and increased enrollment in CTE courses.
