Exploring World Languages

Abstract

Hillsborough County School District, the seventh largest school district in the nation, is economically, ethnically, and linguistically diverse, with 30 percent of families speaking a language other than English. Within the county is MacDill Air Force Base. Almost 90 percent of district’s schools serve at least one military connected family. Several elementary schools with high concentrations of military connected students provide little to no world language learning opportunities. This is the case at the 13 elementary schools and two K to 8 schools targeted for the project. The proposed Exploring World Languages project has three main components in person Spanish language instruction specials for elementary students at Rampello K to 8, an Around the World in person summer camp for elementary students, and virtual language enrichment opportunities for elementary students throughout the school year.
