Aiea Moanalua Radford Complex Area Promoting World Language for World Readiness

Abstract

The schools in the Hawaii State Department of Education make up the South Central District on the island of Oahu. This project includes four South Central District schools Aliamanu Elementary, Aiea Intermediate, Aliamanu Middle, and Radford High. Our combined student enrollment is 3,053, of which 54 percent are military connected students. The district’s project, Promoting World Languages for World Readiness, aims to establish, broaden, and enhance World Language development for K to12 students in language communication skills and cultural awareness. The district’s project will create a world language pathway from K to12 by establishing world language offerings at the elementary and middle levels and promoting high school students to enroll in higher level language courses, thereby equipping our students with world ready skills to increase their marketability in the workplace, entrance into college, and prepare them for success in a global community. Implementation efforts include hiring world language teachers, providing professional development in our recently adopted Hawaii World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, deepening knowledge in proficiency based curriculum, instruction, and assessment, integrating technology enhanced and real world learning experiences into classroom efforts, and increasing stakeholder engagement.
