Mandarin Chinese Language Expansion

Abstract

Wayne County Public Schools will establish and implement a new Mandarin Chinese program at Northwest elementary school (K to 5) with a military student population of 12.71 percent. This is a program expansion for this critical language from grades 6 to12 to all grades. WCPS believes that understanding and respecting cultural diversity enrich the learning environment and all students deserve a quality education. It is essential to promote, enrich, and sustain early language exposure to enhance bilingualism, biliteracy and cultural awareness. Northwest elementary school will be able to be part of this innovative language program and allow the students to learn a logographic language and culture early by using the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Furthermore, cultural components will be embedded in the learning process.
