The Knowing and Embracing World Languages Through Outstanding Opportunities
Abstract
The KEWL TOO Project aims to foster biliterate world language proficiency among learners within the Escambia County School District (FL), particularly focusing on military connected students. Operating across fourteen military connected schools, the project expands language pathways for students in grades K to12. By formalizing language exposure and cultural exploration from K to 5, it sparks elementary students interest in future language studies. The project will pilot the first Spanish immersion program at the elementary level, with the potential for expansion and replication. Early access to high school language courses in grades 6 to 8 accelerates language acquisition, laying the foundation for greater fluency in secondary and post secondary settings. Targeted high schools will see the addition of advanced and college level language courses, diversifying the range of world languages offered to enhance student biliteracy in grades 9 to12.
