Building STEAM Skills through Questioning Understanding Experiencing Sharing and Thinking

Abstract

The goal of Operation QUEST is to build a strong foundation for developing interpersonal and technical skills in grades UTK to 5 and to increase proficiency in STEAM to promote personal growth, interdisciplinary learning, and proficiency in the areas of English language arts, math, and science. This goal will be achieved through in class curriculum instruction support using district developed STEAM curriculum and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) instruction. It will also include organizational capacity building through teacher professional development and curriculum modification to make it accessible to students in special education. Operation QUEST will also foster extracurricular engagement through a STEAM showcase competitions, supplemental tutoring, and community based learning experiences for students at seven elementary schools, all with a minimum of 10 percent military connected youth. Operation QUEST builds on the strategies begun under DODEA Operation STEM Discovery, which began with modifying the curriculum for students in special education and infusing district developed STEAM units of study. The success of OSD was limited due to COVID.
