Fueling Discovery Igniting Secondary Math and Science Engagement Through Teacher Development

Abstract

Harnett County Schools, located adjacent to Fort Liberty Army Base in North Carolina, is embarking on an ambitious initiative to enhance student proficiency. The initiative emphasizes math and science education in middle and high schools with military connections. Effective student engagement will be fostered by implementing math and science strategies prioritizing inquiry based learning and math manipulatives to achieve this goal. Professional development sessions will be tailored to equip educators with the necessary skills to integrate effective instructional approaches. By focusing on research based methodologies, such as high yield instructional practices, teachers will be better prepared to support student learning. New teachers will receive targeted support to ensure they are skilled at delivering standards based instruction and utilizing engaging educational materials and strategies. This support is crucial given the challenges experienced in teacher retention since the pandemic.
