Project SHAPE UP
Abstract
Located in Nebraska, Bellevue Public Schools (BPS) submits this proposal for Project SHAPE UP with the overarching aim of improving physical activity, health, and well being of K to 12 students and a specific goal of improving attitudes towards school while decreasing chronic absenteeism and Health and Physical Education (PE) class failures. In a school climate survey of grade 5 to 12 students, only 56.78 percent of students in military connected schools indicated they like school. From 2022 to 2023, 25.4 percent of students in our military connected schools were chronically absent (ten or more absences) and 4 percent of high school students failed their Health and PE classes often due to absenteeism. Recent research suggests connections between students physical activity, health and well being, attendance, and academic achievement. While fun and engaging PE classes can improve attitudes and health, a district needs assessment determined that our schools lack the equipment and resources needed to fully engage students in PE programs. Key project strategies are 1) professional learning for health and PE teachers focused on best practices, state and national health and PE standards, and creating active learning environments for all students, 2) the selection and purchase of structures and equipment designed to integrate more activity into the current physical education curriculum and 3) family and community engagement in health and fitness promoting activities. Specialized resources will be provided to ensure participation of students with significant disabilities. Measurable student outcomes include improved attitude towards school, decreased chronic absenteeism, and decreased failures in high school Health and PE classes.
