ROPEL STEAM
Abstract
The proposed PROPEL STEAM (Promoting Rigorous Opportunities, Programs, and Education in STEAM Leaming) grant project will elevate the quality of mathematics and science education for military connected (MC) students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). By emphasizing teacher professional learning, student enrichment programming, and family engagement initiatives, this grant seeks to establish a solid foundation for critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical reasoning skills. These skills will prepare students for the demands of the modern workforce. PROPEL STEAM programming will support two PreK to 6 FCPS school communities Fort Belvoir Primary School (FBES Primary) and Fort Belvoir Upper School (FBES Upper). Both schools are located on the Fort Belvoir Army installation in Fairfax County, Virginia, and support MC children whose families work on the Installation as well as at the Pentagon and other federal properties in the Washington, D.C. region. The vast majority of students who attend the Belvoir schools are MC, which has a direct correlation to student mobility rates. The mobility of MC students creates unique circumstances that include frequently adjusting to new school systems with varying academic and behavioral expectations. The variances in school expectations, coupled with family system changes, often create challenges for students instructionally, socially, and emotionally. PROPEL STEAM seeks to increase academic performance and cultivate self efficacy in mathematics and science education, and thereby support academic achievement and successful futures for our MC students.
