Operation Science Literacy Achievement with Math

Abstract

Operation SLAM is designed to provide rigorous and engaging science and math instruction for military connected students in Christian County Public Schools at South Christian Elementary School. It is vitally important that highly mobile military connected students be well grounded in math and science content allowing them to be competitive anywhere in today’s highly competitive world. Operation Science Literacy Achievement with Math (SLAM) is a project designed to build teacher capacity through professional development which focuses on Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) to provide rigorous, engaging science and math instruction for military connected students at South Christian Elementary School. The overarching goal of the project will be to improve the academic achievement of military connected students in math and science. South Christian will receive professional development that supports the shift from current teaching practices to standards based, research grounded instruction which focuses on improving core instruction with robust content knowledge, effective instructional strategies, formative assessment, delivery of engaging, rigorous instruction, and continuous improvement. Students will be provided with intervention opportunities at the point of need, progress monitored for success, and instructional delivery modified as needed based on data. Students and parents will also have the opportunity to be engaged in academic content such as science and math extracurricular activities which are of high interest to students and also have real world applications.
