STEM to STEAM Integrating Arts in the STEM Curriculum
Abstract
Altus Public Schools aims to increase STEM performance by integrating Fine Arts in the STEM curriculum in the STEM to STEAM Project. All students across the district will be offered Fine Arts education during school and in after school STEAM clubs and activities. After school activities will include Fine Arts instruction by teachers, community experts, and student interns. A Destination Imagination team will be organized at each school, aiming to grow problem solving and thinking skills, while working towards competition. STEAM instruction will be implemented in PK to 12 schools as teachers participate in problem based learning professional development and hands on professional learning activities. Students and teachers will have access to STEAM technology in site based labs and a mobile STEAM lab. High School students will have the opportunity to earn certifications in Adobe, USITT, and SBE after attending classes in technical production, broadcasting, and graphic design. Parent and community engagement and partnership will be targeted through student museums, performances, and portfolios, as well as community outreach events. The STEM to STEAM project is intended to increase student test scores, attendance, engagement, and college and career readiness.
