Leap into STEM

Abstract

Leap into STEM is designed to address challenges currently faced in Onslow County elementary and high schools by expanding our current STEM M model to additional grade levels and continuing the support in the middle schools. The proposal planning team identifies two goals with three activities each and outlines a professional learning plan (PLP) for teachers. As the activities and PLP are completed, the project will attain short and long term outcomes and show growth toward the stated goals. The first challenge Leap into STEM addresses is equity in providing core science instruction that meets the criteria outlined in the newly revised NC Standard Course of Study (NC SCOS). The second undertaking for the Leap into STEM effort is to expand access to science enrichment activities at all grade levels and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. With the resources associated with this grant proposal, 1. each fifth grade and ninth grade classroom will offer high level, rigorous, engaging STEM instruction for all students regardless of which school they atttend in OCS, and all teachers will have on call STEM coaching assistance available, and 2. all K to12 students be aware of and have access to engaging science application opportunities. K to 8 will focus on Robotics, while 9 to 12 will focus on the STEM Research Academy.
