Mission STEM Pioneering Pathways in Robotics and Space Exploration
Abstract
Autonomous systems and artificial intelligence are the way of the future, and the future is now. STEM needs to be a focus of K to 12 education if we are to keep up with the demand of STEM careers. Newport News Public Schools uses STEM learning to engage students in science and math concepts, activate student inquiry, and guide informal learning processes. Through extracurricular activities, students will embark on STEM challenges through at home activity kits, after school robotics challenges, Space Camp, and high school day camps. Students will engage with professionals who have made STEM into a career and are at the forefront of emerging technologies with autonomous systems and artificial intelligence. This project includes eleven school locations, (seven elementary) General Stanford Elementary, Knollwood Meadows Elementary, Hilton Elementary, Katherine Johnson Elementary, Kiln Creek Elementary, Charles Elementary, Riverside Elementary, (two middle) B.T. Washington Middle, Gildersleeve Middle, (three high) Woodside High, Denbigh High, and Menchville High. Professional learning will develop the skills of robotics coaches at all levels and prepare teachers to teach a STEM high school summer day camp. A successful program will show student aptitude in using age appropriate STEM skills and increased knowledge and interest in future STEM career opportunities.
