Universal Pre Kindergarten in Kittery Maine

Abstract

The Kittery, Maine School District and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard enjoy a sustained special relationship. As the only school district within a 100 mile radius of the Shipyard to have signed an educational agreement with the Shipyard, we are very proud of our ongoing collaboration, and multiple opportunities to learn and grow together. Our Educational Partnership allows both the Kittery, Maine School District as well as the shipyard to prioritize learning opportunities for the students of Kittery. We have utilized this partnership at nearly every grade level with current and future plans for expanded STEM and internship opportunities for our students. The Kittery School District is seeking to expand and stabilize our fledgling PreKindergarten program through this grant. In School Year 24 and 25 we intend to add two PreK classrooms, which will meet the needs of our identified special education population, and through a weighted lottery, the additional needs of up to 24 other Kittery students. It is our hope to expand this program to be able to fulfill the needs of ALL of our families in Kittery, particularly our military connected families as they often enter our school district as the school year is already underway. We seek the capacity to enroll any and all military connected families that find themselves in Kittery. In our discussions with the Shipyard personnel, it is our understanding that the need for preschool has risen to the top of the list of desired outcomes for military families arriving in our area.
