State of Alabama
Abstract
The State of Alabama respectfully submits this request to obtain financial resources from the Office of Economic Adjustment to develop and implement a sustainable, collaborative program to respond to workforce reductions in the defense sector within the State of Alabama. Budget cuts from the recent sequestration and continued looming threats of cuts to the defense industry in Alabama pose a severe risk to the economic well-being of the state of Alabama, its businesses, and its residents. Alabama has already suffered an estimated $1 billion in cuts due to the sequestration, resulting in an estimated $2.5 billion impact to the state economy. Further recommended cuts will hamper recovery efforts as well as the ability of the state to ensure economic growth in the future. The State of Alabama seeks to work with and support local communities to address military defense issues, including mapping of the defense industrial base and workforce transition assistance. Support from OEA is essential to the sustainability and future growth of the economy of Alabama.
